At last, I am having my knives sharpened.
I bought them over 4 years ago from Amazon.com. Wüsthof Trident, the Classic line. Very nice forged German steel blades, highly stain resistant, perfectly balanced. I’ve been careful with them, even though they get used on a regular basis. But I’ve never had them sharpened. I’d hone them on the steel periodically, but as anyone who knows knives will tell you, a honing steel does not sharpen knives. It just aligns the teeny-tiny “teeth” present in any good knife’s edge.
Bill had been complaining about the knives’ dullness for quite some time now. I made half-hearted attempts to find a place to have them sharpened, mostly with no luck. Williams-Sonoma doesn’t do it. Andronico’s and Draeger’s do it, but only on certain days of the month. Besides, it seemed like such a chore to drive all the way to Stanford or Menlo Park just for knife sharpening.
Anyway, today I called the Santana Row Sur la Table on a lark. Well, whaddya know… they sharpen knives! They’ve even got a quick, 24-hour turnaround time! So off I went, with six knives all wrapped in paper towels. “We charge $1 per inch,” they said. That’s reasonable. Sharpening our six knives of varying lengths will cost $36. Good deal.
BUT…
While I was at the store, I started to browse. Since I had cutlery in the brain, I wandered off to the knife wall. Lo and behold! A Wüsthof Classic 10-inch chef’s knife for only $89.99! Normally this retails for around $140, but Sur la Table was having a sale.
Hem, haw, hem, haw…

I bought it! Mwahahaha.
